In a significant policy shift, Croatia has reintroduced compulsory military service, marking the first time in almost 20 years that young citizens will undergo mandatory training. This decision comes as a response to the evolving security landscape in Europe and aims to strengthen national defense capabilities.
The first group of conscripts has already reported to military barracks for an intensive two-month basic training program. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Croatian government to bolster military readiness in light of recent global tensions and regional security challenges.
Prime Minister Andrej Plenković emphasized that the revival of conscription is crucial for fostering a sense of responsibility and patriotism among the youth. “This is not just about military preparedness; it’s about instilling values of discipline, teamwork, and civic duty,” he stated during a press briefing.
Historically, Croatia abolished compulsory military service in 2008, transitioning to a professional volunteer army. However, with the resurgence of geopolitical threats, such as increased military activity from neighboring countries, authorities deemed it necessary to prepare the population for potential defense needs.
The government has assured that the program is designed to be inclusive, welcoming young men and women aged 18 to 27. Participants will receive training in various military skills, first aid, and leadership, preparing them not only for potential defense roles but also for personal development.
Additionally, the Croatian Ministry of Defense has announced that these conscription efforts will be regularly reviewed to ensure they meet current security requirements while adapting to the needs of the society and the young conscripts.
