In a recent interview with Euronews, Bernd Lange, the German Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and chair of the International Trade Committee, emphasized his unwavering stance regarding the trade agreement with the United States. Lange expressed concerns over potential pressure from the European Commission as the bloc navigates its trade relations with Washington.
During the discussion, Lange asserted that he would not yield to external influences that seek to expedite the implementation of the controversial trade deal. He highlighted the necessity for clarity from the U.S. government, warning that a lack of transparency could lead to significant consequences for the European Union (EU).
“Nobody can pressure me,” Lange declared, underlining his commitment to ensuring that any trade agreement aligns with European interests and standards. His remarks come amid ongoing debates about the implications of the transatlantic trade deal, which has faced scrutiny from various sectors within the EU.
Lange pointed out that the EU’s collective response must be measured and strategic, particularly if the U.S. fails to address the bloc’s concerns adequately. He suggested that the 27 member states should be prepared to consider countermeasures if the negotiations do not yield satisfactory results.
The trade agreement, often referred to as the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), has been a contentious topic since its inception. Critics argue that it could undermine European regulations and standards, while proponents believe it could enhance economic ties between the U.S. and the EU.
Lange’s firm stance reflects a growing sentiment within the EU that prioritizes sovereignty and regulatory standards over rapid trade liberalization. As negotiations continue, the trade chief’s commitment to resisting undue pressure underscores the complex dynamics at play in transatlantic relations.
